Andy begrudgingly attended his first square dance class in 1999. After that first class, Andy and his wife Tami were hooked. In the summer of 2003, Andy attended a caller school run by local caller coach John Marus. With the patient support of the callers and dancers of San Diego County, Andy was given the opportunity to learn the art of calling.
Andy recently retired from his 30 plus year career in the software industry, and most of his time and energy is spent on square dance related activities. Andy is the caller/teacher for three and a half weekly clubs in the San Diego area; a Hexagon club (the Lighthouse Squares), an IAGSDC Multi Level club (Basic thru A2 - The Finest City Squares), a traditional Plus club (Sundown Squares), and an Advanced club (Sponsored by the San Diego County Callers Association). On weekends, Andy has the honor of calling regional dances, Festivals, and Weekends throughout the US. Andy also is a staff caller on Buddy Weaver's Blue Star Records.
Andy believes that his job is to facilitate the dancers' enjoyment of each other. To Andy, a successful square dance is one where the positive energy is high, dancers dance smoothly and confidently, are challenged a bit, but most of all share a hearty laugh or two.
